Set of 4 Vintage Plates Castleton China USA for General and Mrs. Thrasher Artist Signed 9"
This is a set of 4 personalized Castleton China plates. It was a sign of sophistication and status to have customized china designs for formal china patterns.
Castleton China dinner plates hand-painted by G. Beck expressly for General and Mrs. Thrasher. Each plate is scalloped with gold accents on the pearled edge and a thin line just inside the lip. Along the rim of each plate are three leafy accent flowers that are included in the central design. One plate features a pink, or peach, zinnia with several buds. The second features vining snapdragon-style flowers in pink, aqua, and periwinkle. The third plate shows stems of yellow and peach gladiolas centrally. And, on the fourth plate are tufts of soft red and dark blue star flowers. Some plates are numbered on the back starting with ‘300’ then a hyphen then number. One is labeled 300-3, 300-5, 300-6 and one just shows the letter ‘g.’ The ‘300’ is most likely referencing the plate shape. Each bears the golden harp logo of Castleton China and made in the U.S.A. Below the logo is ‘Painted expressly for General and Mrs. Thrasher.’
Each plate is in excellent condition without any evidence of scratches, chips or repairs. Approximately 9” in diameter.
Castleton China is out of business now, but they were a highly respected pottery manufacturer during their heyday, even producing a set of Official Service Plates for President Dwight D. Eisenhower and his wife Mamie, and a full White House China set for President Lyndon Baines Johnson and his wife Lady Bird.
