Note: Excellent condition and apparently largely unused; it is difficult to see signs of use even upon close inspection under bright light conditions. I purchased as part of a larger lot of china at an estate sale in Cincinnati in 2005; many items in the lot retained original felt plate separators labelled "Frank Herschede Co. Jewelers and Silversmiths, Cincinnati"--an indication that they came from an original owner's estate and evidence of care.
Frank Herschede Co. operated 1877-1996.
Castleton China's Museum (1942-1945)
line of dinnerware, upon which this piece is the same form, was exhibited by the Museum of Modern Art when it was first produced and later included in its permanent collection. Manufacturer's of modern china and dinnerware that was initially designed and produced in solid undecorated patterns often reissued pieces with decorative designs such as this tropical floral pattern by Philip R. Costigan.
Eva Zeisel (1906-2011)
was
widely recognized for ceramic & industrial design, particularly after US immigration in 1938; work is in major international museums.
