Description
1866 SIVER ONE THALER COIN FROM BAVARIA – LVDOVICUS II KING – KM 877This silver coin, slightly greater in diameter than a U.S. 50 cent coin (remember them?) was, according to what I have read on line, demonetized, and this may be why someone converted it into a pendant by soldering on a loop so it could be attached to a chain. According to the on line literature, the coin is .900 fine silver, measures 33 mm in diam, and weighs 18.5 grams.
The obverse features the words LVDVICUS II
BAVARIA REX, and a portrait bust which I assume is the king.
Below the bust in fine print is the name of the coin designer, C. Voigt.
The reverse features the Madonna and Child and the words PATRONA BAVARIA, and the date 1866.
While the attachment of the loop may diminish this coin’s pure numismatic value, it is still an interesting piece, one of both numismatic and cultural value.
